From the basics of Buddhism 101, held at St. John’s Cathedral, Los Angeles, we traveled to the largest Buddhist monastery in the western U.S.  The Fo Guang Shan Hsi Lai Temple is located in Hacienda Heights, about 20 miles east of Los Angeles.

From Eastern Orthodoxy’s ancient wisdom to the beautiful liturgy (service) of Tenebrae at St. John’s Cathedral, learn about the roots of Christianity in the Eastern Orthodox and Western traditions.

Hinduism

Swami Sarvadevananda of the Hollywood Vedanta Society presents the basics of Hinduism.

Judaism

Advisor to The Guibord Center Rabbi Suzanne Singer, from Temple Beth El in Riverside, presents Judaism 101.

The Guibord Center was invited to Wilshire Boulevard Temple for a very special presentation on Jewish sacred texts.

Decoding Rituals and Symbols of Judaism takes place during a model Passover Seder at Temple Beth Shir Shalom in Santa Monica, where Rabbi Neil Comess-Daniels explains this ritual meal.

The Guibord Center hosted two interfaith observances of Sukkot, the Jewish Festival of the Harvest. Both of our rabbis are members of the Advisory Council, and each brought a unique flavor to Creating a Sukkah in Observance of Sukkot.

Kabbala is the mystical form of Judaism. Rabbi Mordecai Finley has been teaching Jewish spirituality, mysticism and related fields of study for more than 25 years.

 

Indigenous Spirituality

Cindi Moar Alvitre is a descendant of the Tongva, the original inhabitants of Los Angeles an Orange Counties. She has been a cultural and environmental educator for over three decades.

Steven Charleston is a Choctaw elder and former bishop in the Episcopal Church. A deeply spiritual man, he writes a daily meditation on Facebook that has attracted thousands of followers from all faith traditions.

“The Four Vision Quests of Jesus” is the title of Steven Charleston’s recent book. He sits down in conversation with the Rev. Dr. Gwynne Guibord.

Sikhism

Sikhism 101 covers the basics of the Sikh faith, with Guibord Center Advisor Nirinjan Singh Khalsa. Husband and wife Ravinder and Jacquie Singh Khalsa share about their faith journey and their passion, the Khalsa Peace Corps.

Sikh Sacred Texts takes us to the gurdwara in Pacoima to meet Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh book of scriptures that is also a Guru of the faith.

Decoding Rituals and Symbols of Sikhism brings us back to the gurdwara to learn about the meanings and rituals associated with the Five K’s and to enjoy chanting in the sacred space.

Interfaith Panel Discussions

Beyond the Veil: Life After Death is an exploration of how different faiths understand what lies beyond life in this world.
Session One: Christianity, Islam and Judaism
Session Two: Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism

The panel discussion of the Abrahamic texts sheds light on some of the difficult and troubling texts of the major Abrahamic faiths: Christianity, Islam and Judaism.

Dual Belongings panelists share their personal journey of faith that embraces the essence of two traditions.

Faiths that Fast includes Muslim, Sikh, Hindu, Jewish, Baha’i, Christian and Brahma Kumaris perspectives on how these faiths fast. The panel took place during the month of Ramadan. After the discussion, panelists and attendees broke the fast with a traditional Iftar dinner at the Islamic Center of Southern California.

Interviews

Swami Kriyananda, the last living disciple of Paramhansa Yogananda, sat down for this interview with the Rev. Dr. Guibord shortly before his passing to the next life.

The late Dr. Maher Hathout speaks with the Rev. Dr. Guibord about Muslims in the post-9/11 world and the challenges we all face as people of faith supporting one another.
