Showing Up, Standing Firm

Showing up. Standing firm…

We are all in this together and need to keep showing up for one another: Clergy, unions, communities for justice and peace, kids, seniors, and – yes, even someone marching with her dog.  The messaging, as well as our presence, continues to be powerful. Positive. Nonviolent.

Just a few blocks from where George Floyd was murdered… once again America wakes up… in the bitter cold… The cruelty cannot stand. Americans will not stand for it. Brutality wins in the short-term but ultimately tyrants fall and are crushed by the weight of our humanity and the horror of our hearts at what we allowed to occur.

Brothers of ICE,

This will not end well for you. It never does. I acknowledge that you probably joined for the money that you and your family may desperately need… for the power you exert but will never control… for the brotherhood that will be looked back upon with shame and distain.

You will probably ultimately be the biggest losers of all. And it’s not your fault. Too many of us have been too quiet for too long about the inequities of opportunity and the abandonment of our humanity – our responsibility of basic decency towards one another. We have allowed violence and racism and greed to become the material of our entertainment and the measure of our human wealth. We have revered our guns and our wallets and our status over our hearts and our concerns for one another. But no more.

These days, in the dead of winter, that is changing.

Inspired by one another, we are risking. Caring. Awakening to come to the aid of our neighbors. Laying our lives on the line for one another.

Showing up. Standing firm…

Right there in the bitter cold, in the depths of winter, on sidewalks and in the streets, the thaw has begun.
