“The Real Story – The Holy Quran on Women, Violence and Peace”

May 12 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Free

with Edina Lekovic, Dr. Laila Al-Marayati, and Dr. Asma Sayeed

Join us for a fascinating and revealing journey into the Holy Quran with three women who approach this topic not only as nationally recognized Muslim leaders, but as mothers themselves, and learn what the Holy Quran actually teaches about these topics that are vitally important to all of us today.

Edina Lekovic is the Host of “Meet the Moment” podcast, and former consultant at the Muslim Public Affairs Council. She frequently acts as a national spokesperson for the American Muslim community to media outlets, government officials, interfaith leaders, academic institutions, and community organizations.

Edina is one of the co-founders of NewGround: A MuslimJewish Partnership for Change, Los Angeles, California.

Laila Al-Marayati is a Palestinian-American doctor and Islamic activist, and former presidential appointee to the US Commission on International Religious Freedom, where she served for two years after being appointed by President Bill Clinton.

In the 1990s, Al-Marayati served as a member of the US State Department’s Advisory Committee on Religious Freedom Abroad, and was a member of the official US Delegation to the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China, alongside former-First Lady Hillary Rodham-Clinton, in 1995.

Dr. Asma Sayeed is Associate Professor and the Program Director of Islamic Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles. Her primary research interests include women and gender studies, early and classical Muslim social history, and the intersections of law and social history. Dr. Sayeed received her PhD from the Department of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University.

Light refreshments will be served after the program with an opportunity meet the panelists.
