“Mother Religions and Their Offspring: Hinduism & Judaism”
March 10 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm| Free
with Dr. Joseph Prabhu, Dr. Graham Schweig, and Dr. Barbara Holdrege
Hinduism and Judaism are among the oldest still-existing religions of the world. They share the status of being “mother religions,” that have given birth to other major religions. Hinduism has spawned Jainism, Indian Buddhism, and Sikhism, while Judaism has given rise to Christianity and Islam.
Please join us for a conversation between these two unique “mother religions,” exploring their similarities and differences in the matter of theological and cosmological conceptions, scripture, laws, moral and purity codes, and community-identity. We will also examine the relations between the mothers and the progeny they have spawned.
Dr. Barbara Holdrege is a Professor in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, specializing in South Asian (with an emphasis on Hinduism) and Jewish traditions.
Dr. Graham Schweig is Director of Studies in Religion at Christopher Newport University, Virginia and Distinguished Teaching and Research Fellow at Mira and Ajay Shingal Center for Dharma Studies at the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley.
Dr Joseph Prabhu is Professor (Emeritus) of Philosophy at California State University, Los Angeles, Adjunct Professor of Religion at Claremont Graduate University, Co-Chair of the Southern California Committee for the Parliament of the World’s Religions and a member of The Guibord Center’s Advisory Council.
