Feel the Spirit Moving: A Special Evening of Spirituals, Stories and Strength

September 20 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

A Night of Soul-Stirring Music

Spirituals played an essential role for enslaved individuals in America, serving as a means of communication, fostering community, and providing an outlet for expressing emotions, coping with adversity, and resisting oppression. These songs often contained hidden meanings, functioning as a form of coded language for organizing escapes and facilitating communication on the Underground Railroad.

“Feel the Spirit Moving” is an event that brings people together for an evening of songs and stories. It aims to inspire reflection, provide a moment to breathe and laugh, and serve as a reminder of collective support during challenging times.

Brought together by Charles Lane for this exceptional performance, his remarkable ensemble includes: Lesili Beard, Alannah Garnier, Linda Broadous Miles, Thalia Moore, Caroline McKenzie, Delia Rios, Christopher Craig, Cedric Berry, Charles Lane, Michael Mensah, Adrien Redford, Haqumai Sharp, and Patrick Tsoi-A-Sue.

Charles Lane, a Los Angeles native, is an accomplished tenor with degrees in Vocal Performance from UC San Diego and CalArts. He studied further in New York with renowned tenors Paul Sperry and Fred Carama. A founding member of Zephyr and a longtime performer with LA Guild Opera, Charles brings opera to inner-city schools. He has sung with the LA Opera chorus and the Los Angeles Master Chorale, performing under all four of its directors and appearing as a soloist. Since 2002, he has served as the first Cathedral Cantor at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.

We’re honored to welcome Lieutenant Colonel Chaplain Dr. Brenda Threatt as our Master of Ceremonies
